Dr. and Mrs. M. F. Schlein attended funeral services at the Methodist Church in Monona on Monday afternoon for Dr. Schlein's nephew, Jackie Schlein, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Schlein, who was killed in an accident at his farm home last Friday.
-----
Monona Leader, Thur., 11 July 1963.Jack Schlein, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Schlein, was killed Friday morning, July 5, at 11:15 o'clock while helping tear down a barn on one of his father's farms, the old William Timmerman farm, northeast of Monona.
Boards on one side of the barn had been removed. Jack, his father, his younger brother, David, Gary Kruse, and Henry Timmerman were working inside the building. The boys were loading boards in a pickup.
Mr. Schlein heard a cracking noise and shouted for everyone to get out. They all escaped save Jack, who apparently ran the wrong way and was struck by falling timber. Kruse had to run across the field to the George Topl home to phone for a doctor.
Dr. A. F. Wiley, Allamakee county medical examiner, was called and stated that he apparently had died instantly from being hit on the head by falling lumber.
Kruse, who was working on a beam higher up in the barn, suffered a bruised arm and bruises to the side of his head. Timmerman received a scratch on his nose. Mr. Schlein and David escaped without injury.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church, Monday afternoon, July 8, at 2 o'clock with Rev. Paul V. Clements officiating. The body lay in state at the church from 1 o'clock in the afternoon until the time of the services.. Burial was in the Monona City cemetery.
