The Iowa Recorder (Greene, Iowa) 2-21-1917
William Buchholz 1846-1917
Wm. Buchholz was born near Hannover, Germany. May 22, 1846. Died on Wednesday, February 14, 1917, at eleven o'clock p.m. aged 70 years 8 months and 23 days. He came to America with his parents in 1853, the voyage in a sailing vessel, consuming some nine weeks and his father getting sick died soon after their landing in New York City. The family came on direct to eastern Iowa, locating at Guttenberg.
In 1866, when about 20 years old, Mr. Buchholz came to Butler county and lived near Clarksville and in Clarksville until he came to Greene about ten years ago, in all making him a resident of Butler county for over fifty years.
He was married in December, 1871, to Mary Brockman, who died in October, 1892. Four children were born to this union, viz: Mrs. C. L. Schellenger, Clarksville; Mrs. Bert Ochiltree, Tipton, Iowa; and W.H. Buchholz and Miss Lelah Buchholz of Greene. All survive him and were at his bedside during his last days.
Mr. Buchholz's deathbed was not one of pain, but of relaxing and weakening, he fell into the peaceful sleep that knows no wakening.
In his early years in Butler county Mr. Buchholz engaged in farming in Fremont township, and owing to ill health moved off the farm and located in Clarksville where he was in the mercantile trade for about 15 years. Over twenty years ago he and son W. H. Buchholz established the Wm. Buchholz & Son mercantile business in Greene which has grown to be one of the finest department stores in northern Iowa.
The funeral was held on Saturday at the W. H. Buchholz home and was largely attended, quite a number of old friends from Clarksville being present. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Rev. Chase conducted the service.
Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
Note: Information that I have and is NOT verified by me is: William’s parents are Henry Buchholz and Caroline Kahle. Henry died after arriving in New York City. Caroline came to Guttenburg with her children and later married his brother, Frederich Buchholz who also had children from his first wife Mary Sophie Kahle. Mary Sophie Kahle is buried in Guttenburg. She died December 1, 1850 and is in the Guttenberg City Cemetery.
Other information I have is that they are from Linsberg, which I believe is misspelled. I believe that it should be Linsburg. There was a Pleasant Valley settlement of Germans with a church, which was a daughter church to the church in Husum, Germany. Linsburg is a small village with their church being in Husum. Information about the church near Clarksville, “Evangelische Lutherische Unierte Gemeinde von Pleasant Valley” now known as the First United Church of Christ of Pleasant Valley, Clarksville, Iowa. People in Husum, Germany have confirmed this to me that this was in fact a daughter church.
William and other members of his family attended this church in Clarksville. That can be seen on the Butler County Gen Web. Some of these church records are online.
