Chauncy Johnson Neill was born October 6, 1854 on his father's farm in Farmersburg township, passing away at the age of almost 80 years. He spent his boyhood days on the farm, attending the Hawkeye district school and later completing his high school work in the McGregor high school. He attended the state university of Iowa, being a member of the class of 1881.

Following his college days he entered business in Giard, being in partnership with J.P. Bickel in the creamery and general store business. In 1893 he sold his business interests in Giard and returned to the farm of his boyhood days, spending six years there farming. Then he moved back to Giard, building the present fine residence, now known all over the state as the "Pines" because of the fine dinners Mrs. Neill has served the public. The Neills also lived in McGregor where Mr. Neill operated a soft drink parlor in the buildig formerly occupied by Dick Hellbegr.

In 1882 Mr. Neill was united in marriage to Mamie Bickel. Two years ago, on Christmas, they observed their Golden Wedding anniversary, some thirty relatives and friends helping them celebrate.

As a citizen of Giard, Mr. Neill served for years as treasurer of the Giard school district, also serving on the county school board. He was also a notary public and took pride in this shingle. He was respected by all who knew him as a kind neighbor and friend.

He is survived by his widow who has the sympathy of the community in her bereavement.

Funeral services were held from the home on Thursday afternoon, being conducted by Rev. W.L. Feller and interment was made in the Giard cemetery.

~Monona Leader, Thursday, Sept. 20, 1934

Note: son of Joseph Neill & Emily (Johnson) Neill Belliss. Both are are buried in Clayton county.
