Clayton County Register, Thur., 24 Mar. 1932.
William Herman Werges was born in Clayton township, Dec. 31, 1871, and died at his home in Monona March 15, 1932, aged 60 years, two months and 13 days.
His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Casper A. Werges. Mr. Werges lived on the home farm until a year ago, when he, together with his sister Anna, moved to Monona.
He suffered ill health for many years. His death came suddenly and was unexpected to both himself and his relationship. While he did not feel well, he nevertheless drove to Elkader on Tuesday, and remained busy all day. In an apparent attempt to secure relief from his greater discomfort, which was thought to be but momentary, he passed away without warning.
Mr. Werges was a life-long member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran church and, together with his sister Anna and brother Henry, was one of the donors of the new organ, installed a few years ago.
Of the family of nine children, of which Mr. Werges was a member, there remain two sisters, Mrs. F. W. Schulte, Manly, Iowa, and Anna, Monona, and one brother, Edward C., McGregor.
Funeral services were held at the home in Monona and also at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran church in Garnavillo, March 18, conducted by the Rev M. J. Harder, pastor. Interment was made in the Garnavillo cemetery.
