Mattie Mattison, the oldest of six children, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Mattison was born, May 29, 1852, at Sweden. When three years of age she came with her parents to the United States and settled near Rickardsville, Dubuque county, where they resided for a number of years, later moving to Independence where they resided for a time. Her father purchased a farm north of town. She was united in marriage to Cyrus S. Hines, Jan. 13, 1871. Since that time she has made this place her home. To this union four children were born, two of them, Mrs. Lena Davis and James G. Hines preceded their mother in death. Mr. Hines passed away March 27, 1926. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Allen and Mrs. Martha Jordan of this place, besides other relatives and friends. She passed away at her home Friday afternoon at three o'clock, March 4, 1932, following a stroke of paralysis which occurred Wednesday evening. When found she was unconscious and remained so until the Angel of Death called her home. She united with the Congregational church in 1922. She was an active member of the Ladies Aid society and also of the Royal Neighbors of America. Mrs. Hines visited the homes of the sick and rendered her services wherever needed. In the summer her time was taken up caring for her garden and beautiful flowers of which she was a great admirer. A good woman has gone to her reward and although gone her deeds of kindness will never be forgotten.
