Funeral services for Richard Opitz, who died at his home here at ten o'clock last Sunday morning, following a lingering illness, were held Monday morning, March 7th, in St. Joseph's church, the Rev. Father J. P. Taken officiating.
Richard Opitz was born on the Opitz farm in Boardman township, July 7, 1877, the son of Frederick and Bertha Opitz. He received his education in the country schools and for a time was a student in the local school. For a number of years he followed farming, later to remove to Elkader, where in St. Joseph's church on August 8, 1923, he was married to Mary Martin Penneton.
His sudden death is mourned by his widow, a brother, Max, of near Strawberry Point; a sister, Miss Emma Opitz of Los Angeles, Cal.; a step-son, Martin Penneton, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Madonna Goodin.
He was a devout member of the Catholic church and also a prominent member of the local Volunteer Fire company, being chief of the latter at the time of his death.
Burial was made in St. Joseph's cemetery with Sylvester and Fred Thillen, Harry and Joseph Opitz, nephews, Martin Penneton and Warren Goodin as casketbearers.
