Elkader Register, Thur., 15 Aug. 1901. Volga City column.

Smith Pardee was born in New Haven, Conn., October 27, 1816, and died August 6, 1901, aged 84 years, 9 months and 9 days.

With his parents he moved to Ohio, remaining with them until he was 17 years old. In 1836 he went to Michigan and in 1851 he located in Clayton Co., Iowa. On Aug. 15, 1843, he married Miss Ann Davis, who died in 1861 leaving two children, Susan, now Mrs. David T. Ring, of Minnesota, and Elias F., who resides on the old homestead, near this place.
Mr. Pardee's second marriage occurred on June 3, 1863, to Mrs. Mary Josephine Swift, by whom one child, Isaac Willis, a resident of Chicago, was born.

Mr. Pardee was in every sense a respected citizen. He was always numbered among those whose influence is used to improve the standard of living, whether it be concerning affairs of local or of national importance. More than being a good citizen he was a consistent Christian, having become a deciple of Christ about 60 years ago, remaining true to the confession of his early manhood and thus giving to god the best years of his life. He was permitted to enjoy more than the years allotted to man and with the consciousness of a life work well done, to await in peace and comfort the summons, "Come up higher."

He leaves to mourn, besides the widow and children, one brother, Elias Pardee, of Dowagiac, Mich., now 74 years of age; one sister, Mrs. Marry Cooper, of Brooklyn, Ia., aged 82; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held in the Christian church Wednesday, Rev. Mattox, of Arlington, officiating in the presence of a very large assemblage of friends and neighbors. Interment was made in the Volga cemetery.

(Note: WPA records list him as Smith Pardu, 1816 - 06 Aug. 1901, buried in Hillcrest cemetery.)
