Elkader Register, Thur., 23 May 1901.
On Thursday evening, May 16th, 1901, at about 4:30 p.m. occurred the death of John Hand, Sr., at the advanced age of __ years (Looks like 75)
The deceased was born and grew to manhood near the town of Cootill, in the county of Monaghan, Ireland, where his people still reside, except one brother who is at Scranton, Pennsylvania.
John Hand came to the United States at an early age and wended his way, with the tide of emigration, to McGregor, Ia., where he resided for a number of years making a host of friends both in McGregor and all over Clayton county. He was united in marriage to Margaret Delany, Oct. 21st, 1865. To this union were born five children, all living. Rose, now Mrs. Wm. Burns, of Oelwein, Kate, now Mrs. Patrick Needham. of Elkport, Wm. of Elkport, and John, Jr., and Mamie at home. These, with his wife are left to mourn the loss of a loving father and husband.
John Hand was honored and respected by his friends and neighbors. No one in need ever applied to him in vain, and no man was ever turned from his door hungry. He was known as an honest, upright man and a devout Christian, and died with all the consolations of his faith about him. The last rites were performed and the funeral sermon was given at the Catholic church at Elkport by Rev. D. T. Minogue, after which his remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of friends and neighbors. May he rest in peace.
