Elkader Register, Thur., 23 May 1901. McGregor column.
One of McGregor's pioneer citizens passed to his reward Friday. J. R. Blackburn, born in Pennsylvania 75 years ago, came west in early life and settled in Iowa. He was a carpenter and worked at his trade until about six years ago, when he had a stroke of paralysis which left him very much disabled. Lately he has been feeling ill and a severe stroke Thursday ended his life. He leaves a wife, three sons, Riley of this place, George of Milwaukee and Frank of Chicago, and two daughters, Mrs. Sarah Wallis and Mrs. Kittie Rogers, all of whom were present at the funeral. Rev. W. H. Smith conducted the funeral services at the house Sunday afternoon and spoke deserved words of praise for deceased, who since boyhood has been a faithful member of the Methodist church. Mrs. Blackburn is very ill, the shock of the death of her husband seeming to have caused nervous prostration.
