Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Nov. 1901. Clayton column.
The people of our little town were painfully shocked last Wednesday morning by learning of the sudden death of Mrs. L. O'Meara after but a few days of illness. Her demise was wholly unexpected as no dangerous symptoms were manifest, but on Wednesday morning a critical change set in followed by heart failure, wherein she quietly passed away. Bridget Finn was born in Ireland, September 27th, 1843, and emigrated to the United States, with her parents, in 1851, coming direct to Jones county, Iowa, where her parents engaged in farming. She was married to Lawrence O'Meara at Dubuque, in 1865, where Mr. O'Meara was engaged for a number of years in the mercantile business which was later destroyed by fire. Five children came to bless the happy union, four of whom survive her. Mr. and Mrs. O'Meara came to Clayton November 19th, 1880, where they have since resided and where their children grew to noble manhood and womanhood. She was a thorough Christian lady in all her actions and belief, being a devout member of the Catholic church and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew her. A sorrowing, aged husband deeply mourns the loss of a true and faithful wife and helpmate, while her four children deeply grieve at the loss of a kind and loving mother whose place can never more be filled, and when the beautiful hands of mother have been gently folded over the onece faithful breast and the heart within has been stilled by that grim messenger of death, 'tis then one realizes the true worth of one whose thought was of her loved ones. The children who survive her are Thomas, of Clayton; Miss Sabina, of St. Louis; Mrs. Ed. Kuempel, of this place; and Clemons, of Harmony, Minn. She is also survived by two brothers and two sisters. The funeral services were held at St. Joseph's church at Garnavillo, Friday morning and the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery at that place, followed by scores of friends. May her peaceful slumbers be perpetual.
