Frederick Gerhard Walke died early Wednesday morning, July 1, at his home in Guttenberg, following an illness of several months.
He was born Dec. 31, 1878, to John H. and Wilhelmina Walke at the farm home six miles west of Guttenberg and had lived his entire life in the Guttenberg community. His grandfather, Gerhard Walke, was one of the pioneer settlers who helped found the Pioneer Rock Church at Ceres, and he was baptized and confirmed in the Ceres Church and received his education in the rural schools.
On May 5, 1904, he was married to Bertha Marie Lundt at the home of her parents in Elkport. Two children were born to them, Delos of Elkader and Evelyn at home. For many years he was employed by the township and by the Iowa State Highway Commission.
He is survived by his wife and two children, and two grandchildren, Gary and Donna of Elkader, and one sister, Mrs. Alvina Herboldsheimer of Vinton.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. E. W. Kramer of Guttenberg at the Pioneer Rock Church at Ceres at 2 o'clock Friday, July 3 with burial in the Ceres cemetery.
