Joseph William Russell was born Feb. 17, 1884, at Elkader, Iowa, the son of James and Martha Russell. He grew to young manhood in this vicinity and attended the Elkader public schools. On Nov. 29, 1912, he was married to Lottie Henkes. To this union were born two sons, Lloyd, now of Monona, and Glenn of San Diego, Calif.
Mr. Russell was engaged in farming west of Farmersburg for a number of years. In 1941 he entered the sand and gravel business at Elkader, where he continued to work until February, 1957, when ill health forced him to leave his business. He went to Mason City, where for a time he lived with his son Lloyd and wife, but for the past year and a half he had resided at the Schiff Rest Home at Mason City.
On July 11 he was taken to the University Hospital at Iowa City to undergo surgery, from which he had recovered to the extent that he was to return home Monday, Aug. 24. Word was received Sunday evening that he had died suddenly Sunday p.m. The exact cause of death is not known.
Mr. Russell was preceded in death by his father, mother, and a sister Julia (Mrs. Louis Reincke). He is survived by two sons, Lloyd and Glenn, their wives, one granddaughter, a number of nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as a host of friends, both in the vicinity of Elkader and Mason City.
Services for Mr. Russell were held Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m. from the Witt Funeral Chapel at Elkader, the Rev. George M. Richter officiating, with burial at the East Side cemetery. Pallbearers were Merritt Hamilton, George Meyer, Henry Wolf, Anton Johnson, Cecil Moyna and Roy J. Hyde.
Those attending the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Eric Aarvig, Story City; Mr. and Mrs. Royal Russell, Anamosa; Miss Fern Hood, Fredericksburg; and Mrs. Lucy McGann, Chicago. All are cousins of Mr. Russell.
