Funeral services for August Helwig, 91, one of the pioneer residents of this community, were held at the Schultz funeral home on Saturday, June 6. Mr. Helwig died at his home here on Wednesday, June 3. The Rev. H. W. Raduege, pastor of the Evangelical United Brethren church at New Richmond, Wis., and the Rev. A. W. Ebert, pastor of the Pilgrim Evangelical United Brethren church at Monona were in charge of the services. Burial was in the Giard cemetery.
He was the son of Conrad and Dorthea Oelke Helwig. He was born in a log house near Froelich in Giard township on the farm his father purchased from the government. He lived here until 1937 when he retired to Monona.
On October 12, 1897, he was married to Clara Datisman of Sherill, Dubuque county. The couple celebrated their golden wedding five years ago.
Mr. Helwig attended country school and was a constant reader until his eyesight failed about two years ago. When the Farm Bureau was organized in Clayton county, he was one of the early members. As one of the outstanding farmers of the community he was skillful in devising labor saving ideas in his work. In later years he found much enjoyment in cabinet making. He was known in the community for his integrity, honesty, uprightness, and genial good nature.
Surviving are: his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Melvin Beimfohr of Froelich and Miss Willa Helwig of Annviille, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Carl and William; a sister, Mrs. Jacob Miller.
