Joseph Clement Uriell was born in Read Township on December 8, 1872, the son of James and Sarah Uriell. Mr. Uriell, who was the last of the pioneers in Read Township died at his home July 30, 1953. Death was due to complications of a broken hip on November 8, 1951.
Mr. Uriell lived his entire life on the farm where he was born, the farm that his grandfather Patrick Uriell purchased from the government in 1841.
He attended and graduated from the Elkader public school. He was engaged in farming his entire lifetime.
On December 22, 1898, he was united in marriage to Matilda Brannon, of Lawler. She died October 31, 1948.
Mr. Uriell was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church, the Holy name Society, the Catholic order of Foresters and the Modern Woodmen of America.
He is survived by six children; Stella, Zita and Virgil at home; Mrs. Joseph (Coletta) Kister and Don Uriell, Garnavillo; Mrs. Joseph (Madonna) Collins, Elkader; three sisters, Mrs. Ella Glennon, Rochester, Minn., Cecilia Kelleher and Regina Uriell, Elkader. One son, Joseph J., preceded him in death August 3, 1928.
Services were held at St. Joseph's church August 3, with the Rev. Cletus Hawes officiating. Pallbearers were: Fred Bente, Haldon Reimer, Chris Scherf, James Connell, Frank Lynch and Lawrence Downey.
