Maxine Ruth Maggert, 31, wife of Gayle Maggert, died at the Prairie du Chien hospital, October 21, following a hunting accident. Mrs. Maggert had been stricken with polio last summer which had left a weakness in her arm and shoulder, and this is thought to have contributed to her dropping her gun on the ground discharging the bullet which fatally wounded her.
She was born at Brandon, Iowa, February 3, 1922, and came to Clayton county in 1936 attending high school in Elkader. August 5, 1939, she was married to Gayle H. Maggert and in 1944 moved to a farm four miles east of Elkader which was their home at the time of her death.
Mrs. Maggert is survived by her husband and six children, Sharon Lee Ruth, Kurtis Gayle, Richard Hugh, Terryl Fredrick, Michael Bruce and Dennis Patrick; her parents, Mrs. Walter Peterson of Dubuque and Floyd Freeman; three brothers, Wendell of Elkader, Fred of Dallas, Texas, and Bruce who is in the navy; also three half-sisters, Madra, Judy and Kathy Freeman of Cedar Rapids; two step-sisters, Janice Petersen of Dubuque and Wanda Plozel of Monona; and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Donley of Vaughn, Wash.
Mrs. Maggert was a member of the First Christian church in Cedar Rapids. Services were held in the Congregational Christian church in Elkader with the Rev. David G. Howell officiating. Pallbearers were Fred Stendel, Leslie Hill, Junior Fisko, Jake Rothlisberger, Robert Meyer and Raymond Meyer.
