Thursday, July 28th, 1892, at his home in Monona township, occurred the death of John Madden, an old settler of Clayton county, at the age of 55 years.
Deceased was a native of county Kings, Ireland, but came to the United States in the early 50's. At the outbreak of the war he enlisted in the union army and served four years receiving injuries from which he suffered for years, and which finally resulted in his death.
He leaves a widow to mourn his departure. The funeral took place on Saturday, and was largely attended.
May he rest in peace.

The Monona Leader, Thursday, August 4, 1892, printed a brief notice that "...the funeral of John Madden occurred at the Catholic church at 10 o'clock Saturday."
I did not find an obit for him in the Monona paper.
Note: he is either buried in the St. Patrick cemetery, Monona OR in the Monona City cemetery. Although a headstone was ordered for him in 1896, it has not yet been located in one of the cemeteries. Records are in conflict as to which cemetery.
