Killed by Runaway Team – Sam Wood, son of Alexander Wood, of Read township, went to Littleport on Monday last, for seed wheat.
About 10 o’clock at night the team returned home with a few sacks of grain on board, but with no driver.
About 11 o’clock he was found by passersby, and word being given to Griffith, the station agent at Littleport, he went out and found him, and finally brought him to the depot, where he lived until 9 o’clock Tuesday morning.
It is supposed, and the evidence is good for the supposition, that the team became frightened and ran away upsetting the wagon, and throwing Sam out on the road and the sacks of grain on to him. The fall and so great that doubtless the skull was crushed.

Parents: Alexander (1826-1902) and Mary Ann (1829-1911) are buried in Eastside Cemetery, Elkader but Sam may be buried elsewhere.
