Accidently Killed – A sad accident occurred in the family of Joseph Meyers, in Highland, on Tuesday afternoon last. A son, Peter Meyers, aged six years, in company with a neighbor’s son, John Turner, aged five years, were upstairs playing, when they found a pistol which belonged to an older brother of Peter.

The boys in examining the pistol by some means managed to discharge it, the charge entering young Turner’s right hand, the ball passing through and into the neck of young Meyers.

The little fellows terribly frightened and bleeding profusely rushed down stairs to Mrs. Meyers. Peter lived but a short time after reaching his mother.

It is a sad blow to the afflicted family who have the sympathy of the community. The funeral takes place today at the family residence.

Elkader Register: September 12, 1878
