Died - at his home near Monona, July 15th, 1900, Mr. Lawrence Humphrey, 75 years of age. He was born in County Limerick, Ireland, 1825, and with his parents and four brothers, emigrated to America in 1847. He settled in Wisconsin and five years later moved to Iowa and located on the farm southwest of Monona, where he lived until his death.
In 1861 he was married to Mary Fleming, who with nine children survive him, one daughter having preceded him to the grave.
Being one of the oldest pioneer citizens, he was well known among the early settlers, and was honored and respected as a kind and indulgent parent and as an honest, upright, industrious citizen.
The funeral was held on Tuesday, at St. Patrick's church, Monona. Mass was celebrated by Rev. M. Hogan, after which, the remains were consigned to the grave in the Humphrey cemetery.
He was a man of noble qualities. He was a kind and generous neighbor whose greatest effort in life was to do good. He has passed above and beyond earth into the land of the unknown. If he had any faults let us bury them with his dust, and only recall the good deeds he has done. Let our only wish be that he is now and will forever be in communion with the good and just who have preceded him down the valley of death.
