Michael Humphrey was born in Limerick, Ireland, Sept. 29, 1830, and died at his home near Monona, Wednesday evening, Oct. 17th, 1900. At the age of 17 years, with his parents he came to America, taking up their residence in Canada, where they remained one year, and where the good father passed into that land from hence none return.
In [1850?] the family, consisting of the mother and five sons, came to Racine county, Wis., where they settled, remaining until 1852 when they came to Clayton county, acquiring a strip of government land and by purchase, secured the farm home, about 4 miles south-west of Monona.
In the year 1856 Mr. Humphrey and Miss Mary M'Guire were united in marriage. Eight children were born to them: Richard, the first born, died at the age of 9, and James 2nd son, at the age of 2 years. Those with the mother surviving the departed husband and father are Mrs. Kate Vaughan, of Algona, Iowa; Mary, at home with her mother; Louis at home; Mrs. Lizzie Leslie, of Oelwein; Peter at home and Mrs. Teresa Ryan, of Luana. He was the brother of Richard, James and Lawrence Humphrey, the latter preceded him to the grave by only a few months.
Mr. Humphrey's long residence in this township and his familiarity with the people made him widely known. He was a home man, in every sense of the word, revering the home as his palace in [fee?], devotedly attached to his family, and the best gratified in the presence of the home circle.
He was a man of excellent character, a devoted and consistent member of the Catholic church of this city. Honest and upright in his dealings with mankind, he sought to do by others as he would be done by.
The funeral ceremonies were conducted by Rev. Father Hogan at the Catholic church on the 16th and were largely attended. Burial in the Humphrey cemetery.
