Adeline Hancock, widow of Morris Nathan Hancock, one of Monona's early residents passed away in death in Marshalltown on Saturday, Jan. 22, 1927 at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 2 days. She was born in Ohio, later moving with her family to Wisconsin.

In 1869 she was united in marriage to Morris Nathan Hancock. The young couple settled on a farm near Monona, where they lived until 1884 when they moved into town. Here they lived until the death of the husband in 1908. Soon after his death the widow went to live with her son where she remained until recent years when she took up residence in Marshalltown.

She was the wife of a Civil War Veteran, and a member of the W.R.C. and affiliated with the Methodist church since childhood.

She leaves a sister, Mrs. Martha Gregg, of Monona, and a brother, Sam Arnold, also well known here. Two children also survive her, Morris Hancock of Glendive, Montana and Mrs. Martha Wheeler, of California. Besides these are several nieces and nephews well known to Monona people, Mrs. Herb Wagner living near town being one of them.

The body was brought to Monona for interment, accompanied by her son Morris. Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church on Tuesday, Jan. 25th and burial in the Monona cemetery.

~Monona Leader, Thursday, January 27, 1927

Note: Her husband Morrison Hancock has a large gravestone, with his inscription on the right side of the face. The entire left side is not engraved .... but presumably Adeline is buried next to her husband. The obituary of her sister, Martha Gregg, names their parents as Jefferson & Ruth Arnold. Iowa Certificate of Death (familysearch.org) gives DOB 7/20/1845 & mother's maiden name as Mendinhall
