Mrs. Frances Haworth, 92, the oldest living resident of Monona, died at her home early Wednesday morning of a heart attack from which she had been ill for nearly a week.

She was born at Elkhart, Ind. Sept. 10, 1848, a daughter of William and Elizabeth Randall. She came to Monona when 9 years old and had the honor of being the oldest citizen who has lived here continuously. One of three widows of Civil war veterans who live in Monona, she has the distinction of being a charter member of the Woman's Relief corps, although she has not been an active member for many years.

She was married to John H. Harworth [sic - his MI was L. for Lytle] while he was home on a furlough from the Civil war in 1864. Mr. Haworth died in July, 1905.

When Mrs. Haworth came to Monona there were only 28 log houses and a few places of business so she has always been considered an authority on pioneer life. she has always taken an active part in community life having been one of the first photographers in Monona. She witnessed the coming of the first train to Monona in the spring of 1864.

During her life Mrs. Haworth completed work on twenty-four scrap books, having started the first on in 1885. Contents of these books are obituaries of friends and relatives and stories of the first settlers in and around Monona. In one she has a specimen of her father's handwriting.

Mrs. Haworth had a very alert mind and was active up to the very day of her illness. Her hobbies were making scrap books, collecting curios and oddities, and crocheting. She enjoyed flowers and in her earlier years loved to care for them in her garden. She listened to her radio daily and kept up with world events.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Freedom Walters of Rossville; Mrs. Edwina Parrish of Canada and Mrs. Murtie Mitchell of Monona. There are eleven grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. Two children, Mrs. George Ferguson and a son William preceded her in death.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.

Note: Burial is in the Monona City cemetery, where her & John's inscriptions are on her parents gravestone. Mr. and Mrs. Haworth are mentioned frequently in the local papers throughout the years. The spelling HAWORTH and HAWARTH are used in the various articles, but HAWORTH is on his military gravestone and on the Randall family stone.

The Walters families all live near Rossville, while Mrs. Haworth, who is 91 years old, is perhaps Monona's oldest citizen, she has always lived here, a Civil war widow of John Haworth, and a daughter of Wm. Randall, one of the early settlers in Monona. Mrs. Haworth is in excellent health for her age, and visits her daughter at Rossville quite frequently. ~published in the Monona Leader, Thursday, July 4, 1940
