Mrs. Clara Vaupel died at Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday, October 20th, 1921, aged 86 years. Her remains were brought to Elkader last evening and interred at the East Side cemetery this morning.
Clara Sandzanger came from Germany to America, with her parents in 1846. In 1849 they came to Clayton county. Here she married John C. Vaupel and their children were born and reared. For 42 years she was a part of the life of this county and city.
In 1891 she moved to Ashland, Oregon, where she lived 9 years. She then returned to Iowa and lived for one year at Forest City with her daughter, Anna Vaupel Erickson. For more than 15 years she made her home in Des Moines with her daughter, Lizabeth Vaupel Griffith. For three years she was at Long Beach, California, with her daughter, Dr. Margaret Vaupel Clark. For the past two years she has been again in Des Moines.
Eight of her eleven children survive her. Six of them are in Elkader today. They are: Dr. Margaret V. Clark, of Long Beach, Cal.; C. H. Vaupel, of Ashland, Oregon; Anna V. Erickson, of Forest City, Ia.; Kate V. Hossfeld and Lizabeth V. Griffith, of Des Moines, Iowa; and Jessie V. Bi_knell, of Linville Falls, North Carolina. Two sons, A. L. Vaupel, of Valley City, N. Dak., and George W. Vaupel, of Portland, Oregon, were unable to be here.
