Elkader Register, Thur., 27 Oct. 1921. Fairview column.

The funeral services of Clay Smith were held from the Bethel church on Thursday of last week. Rev. Riggs of the Fairview church preached the funeral sermon while the Fairview choir furnished the music. There was a large crowd present, probably not one half of the people were able to secure even standing room in the church. Asa Clay Smith was the 4th of eight children born to Asa and Sarah Smith. He was born March 4, 1866, in Elk township, Clayton county, Iowa. While but a baby his parents moved to Missouri, because of ill health of the baby they immediately returned to Iowa. Since that time his life has been lived among us here in our neighborhood. In common with all the boys of those days his summers were spent in work upon the farm and the winters in attendance upon the district school during such short periods as it was in session. His estimate of the training which he lacked is shown by the effort put forth to obtain for his own children that which was impossible for him to secure. He was married July 23rd, 1890, to Floretta Harrison. To them were born five children, Ray, Lloyd, Elsie, Osie and Lowell. Of these all but Lloyd survive him. Lloyd, while in the service, having contracted influenza, passed over the river of death before his father. After the first two years of married life the farm near Updegraff which has since been their home for 28 years was purchased. Some three years ago Mr. Smith moved onto a farm on the Osterdock road. Shortly afterword he moved to Guttenberg to provide better schooling for Lowell, the youngest child. But he was here only a little while when he was attacked by the mysterious trouble which finally after months of suffering caused his death. He passed away at his home in Guttenberg Oct. 18, 1921, aged 55 years, 7 months and 11 days. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, his children with his 6 grandchildren, and many relatives and close friends.
