Elkader Register, Thur., 20 Oct. 1921.
Alwine Suhr was born September 16th, 1859, in Read township. She was the eldest daughter of Joachim and Mariea Suhr. She was baptized at Ceres, Iowa, and later confirmed at Clayton Center by Reverend Seifert. She was united in marriage to Henry Gossman on March 3rd, 1876, and to this union were born six children, Charles of Read township; Etta Matt of Farmersburg township; Emil of Elkader; Alvina Breitsprecher of Elkader; and Arno at home. One son, Walter, preceded his mother in death.
The family resided on a farm in Read township for thirty-two years, after which they moved to Elkader, twelve years ago.
Deceased was an industrious woman, and liked to do fancy work. She did not go out much on account of being deaf. Most of the time she was in poor health. A year ago she suffered a fractured hip, and later became a victim of heart trouble. About three weeks ago she went to stay with her son for a few days, but her condition became serious., and in spite of the loving care she passed peacefully away at 11:30, on the 12th of October, 1921, at the age of 62 years and 26 days. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, five children, eight grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Louis Mueller of Farmersburg.
Funeral services were held at the home of her son Charles, Rev. Franks of Elkader officiating. The remains were then (taken) to the Zions church, where Rev. Wiese officiated. Interment was made in the family lot at Clayton Center.
