Elkader Register, Thur., 13 Oct. 1921. From the Inwood, Iowa, Herald, undated.
From the Inwood, Iowa, Herald we learn of the death of Mrs. Rebecca Smith who died at the home of her niece, Mrs. Herbert Renshaw, in that place Thursday, September 29th, 1921.
Rebecca Ann Hays was born August 21, 1830, in Washington county, Pennsylvania. In 1862 she came to Iowa settling at National, where she met and married Alfred Smith. One daughter, Lillie, was born to them, who grew to maturity, becoming a school teacher. This occupation she followed for several years when failing health interfered and she died in 1915. Mr. Smith died some thirty-nine years ago.
Mrs. Smith moved to Inwood from this county about nineteen years ago, accompanying her daughter who was a teacher there. Because of increasing feebleness she gave up her own home two years ago and went to live with Mrs. Renshaw, who most tenderly and patiently cared for her until the end came at the great age of 91 years, one month and eight days.
Funeral services were conducted at the Renshaw home Saturday, October first, and she was buried in the Richland cemetery at Inwood beside her daughter.
She is survived by a sister, Mrs. E. H. Jack, of Elkader, who is in her eighty-ninth year, and a number of nieces and nephews.
