Elkader Register, Thur., 15 Sept. 1921.

After a lingering illness of about six years, Arthur Kuehl, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Kuehl of this city, peacefully closed his eyes in the last sleep on Tuesday, September 13th, at 5 o'clock in the morning, at the age of 26 years, 7 months and 13 days.

Arthur was born on the J. J, Kuehl farm south of Elkader, on January 30th, 1895. Their his childhood and school days were spent. Later he assisted his father in the work on the farm until about six years ago, when he was taken sick with pleurisy. After recovering somewhat, he was always willing and glad to do some lighter work on the farm.

About two years ago the family moved to Elkader. In the meantime Arthurs condition had not improved as wished and expected; other complications had set in. It was deemed advisable to see other doctors could and would do for him, so he went to Rochester, Minn., where the doctors encouraged him, stating that if his tonsils were removed, he would be a well man. He gladly submitted to the operation, but even that did not give the desired result. Last year his father took him to Rochester again. This time his limbs were put in a plaster of Paris cast, which he wore for more than a year. The inconvenience this caused him and the pain suffered during that time no one, but himself, ever fully realized. But willingly and patiently he would live up to the rules and directions prescribed by the doctors, always hoping for the best from day to day.

The second week in June of this year the parents again took him to Rochester. Now the cast was removed and the parents were told to take him home and give him the best of care. On June 11th they returned, and complying with the doctor's directions Arthur remained as quiet as possible, by staying in bed; but in spite of it all there was no change for the better. More and more it became apparent that all efforts to prolong the precious life would be in vain. Everything conceivable was done to make it as comfortable as possible for the patient; whenever he expressed a wish, it was complied with as long as there was any possibility to fulfill the same. If ever a child received most tender care in days of sickness and helplessness, Arthur certainly received it from his loving mother, who could always be found by his bedside. But since the mother could not do the work alone she was most ably and faithfully assisted by the father, sisters, brothers and kind neighbors and friends. That a bright and cheerful disposition has a great attractive power was ever and again demonstrated by the fact that so many friends called on Arthur during his sickness in order to be greeted by his pleasant smile, and to hear a word of cheer from his lips. He cheerfully bore his cross and joyfully endured physical pain and ills, and would even smile through his tears. His expressed wish, to die with a smile on his face, was granted.

I cannot say and I will not say.
"That he is dead; he is just away.
With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand,
He has wandered into a better land.
Think of him faring on,
As dear in the love THERE as the love HERE."

The loved ones here that will think of the loved one gone before are:

The parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Kuehl; two brothers and seven sisters, George Kuehl of Boardman Twp.; Mrs. Carrie Reimer of Volga Twp.; Mrs. Marie Reimer of Volga Twp.; Fred Kuehl of Boardman Twp.; Mrs. Katie Baars of Highland Twp.; Mrs. Hilda Dohrer of Volga City; Mrs. Louise Klink of Cox Creek Twp.; Francis and Mildred at home.

He will also be missed by Grandpa J. Kuehl, who always thought so much of Arthur and by the many relatives and friends.

He was a member of the Confirmation Class of 1911, of the Evang. Brotherhood and the Evang. Friedens Church.

The funeral services occurred this afternoon from the home and the Evang. Friedens church, the pastor Rev. C. H. Franks, officiating. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery.
