Herman Luers, father of J. H. Luers died at Elkader last Tuesday morning aged 77 years, 7 months and 25 days. Deceased was born in Hanover, Germany, came to the United States in 1851, and to Clayton County several years later where he engaged in farming. In 1887 he moved to Elkader where he resided to the time of his death. His wife died in 1890. There were ten children born to them, seven of whom are living, and all but a daughter, Miss Laura, who is in California, were present during his sickness and at the funeral. We glean from the Elkader Register which speaks very highly of him as a man and a citizen.

Elkader Register, Thur., 03 Nov. 1899.
Our community has this week received a sad blow in the passing away from their
midst of an old and highly esteemed citizen, Mr. Herman Luers, who died at
3:15 o'clock, Tuesday, October 31st.Until within the past few weeks Mr. Luers had seemed in excellent health and
although he had reached the advanced age of seventy-seven years, his friends
and neighbors had hardly thought of calling him an old man, so active was he
in both mind and body. His energy was quite remarkable for one of his years
and this makes the shock greater to his relatives and friends who had no
thought of losing him so suddenly, but that dread disease pneumonia, with
complications, came upon him and he could no longer retain a hold upon life,
which seemed so bright to him. Mr. Luers was a great lover of nature and in
his quiet way, enjoyed much in life, which many people fail to take time to
observe. A few hours before he closed his eyes for the last time he requested
that the curtain be drawn that he might once again gaze upon nature's
beautiful sunset.Mr. Herman Luers was the son of Herman and B. M. Decken-Luers, of Hanover, Germany, and was born in that place, March 6th, 1822, where he resided until 1851, when he, with his wife and two little children, came to America.
He had in 1848, been married to Miss Dorothea Sophia Schirmer, of Hamburg, who made him a noble, loving companion. Eight children were born to this couple after coming to America.
Of their ten children all are living but three, George, Herman and Margaret (Mrs. Louis Venus).
The loss of these children and of Mrs. Luers, in 1890, greatly depressed him, but with the courage of a hero he bore up under these afflictions and made a happy home for those of his family remaining with him.
Mr. Luers was a carriage maker by trade in Germany, at which he worked for five years in Cincinnati, Ohio. On coming west he purchased a farm in Volga township, where the family resided for nine years, when he disposed of that farm and purchased a much larger one in Cox Creektownship.
In 1887 he gave up farm life and removed to Elkader, where he has since resided, and where he has won to himself many friends, among both old and young by his genial, social nature.
Mr. Luers has lived a quiet, temperate life, spending much of his leisure time in reading. He always kept up with the topics of the day, was a good historian and enjoyed classical literature both in English and in German.
In his youth he became a member of the Lutheran church and has been a thorough student of the Bible.
The sympathy of the many friends of Mr. Luers is extended to the bereaved family, particularly to Miss Laura Luers, who recently left for California and was unable to be present during his sickness.
Funeral services were held today at 2 o'clock p.m. at the Congregational church.
