Fred Pruess was born Nov. 4, 1837, at Losenrade, Germany, where he attended school until he was fourteen years of age, he then worked as a farmer until he was twenty years of age, when he was called into military service in 1858 and served three years in the Army. After that he served an apprenticeship as a stone mason. In 1866 he re-entered the military service and fought in the war against Austria and the Southern Countries. In 1869 he emigrated to America and settled in Read township, Clayton county. In 1871 he returned to Germany and was united in marriage to Fredericka Brabandt, returning to America with his wife in 1873 to settle down on a farm in Boardman township. Twenty years later they moved to Sperry township near Volga.
To this union ten children were born, eight sons and two daughters: Frank of Cedar Rapids; Herman of Monona; Louie of Volga City; _________ of Des Moines; Anna of Strawberry Point; Freda of Chicago. Three sons preceded the father in death. Two sons, Edward and Helmuth served in the World War. Besides these he leaves eighteen grandchildren. Fred Pruess was suddenly taken sick Thursday evening and passed away peacefully Saturday evening, May 7, 1921, in the presence of his beloved wife and all of his children. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Presbyterian church, Rev. Wartena officiating. Interment was made in Hillcrest cemetery.
