Elkader Register, Thur., 24 Feb. 1921. Volga City Views column.
Miss Stella Burns passed away Saturday night at her home here. She has been a sufferer for months. This bereaved family has the sincere sympathy of the entire community as this is the third death in the family circle in the past three months. Stella C. Burns was born June 6th, 1893, and died February 20, 1921, at the home in Volga where she has lived all her life. She graduated from the Volga high school in 1910, after which she taught in the rural schools for several terms. Since then and up to within a year ago she taught in the Volga schools at which time she was compelled to resign on account of ill health. Everything was done for her that could be done. She had been a long and patient sufferer, planning what she would do when she recovered. Stella will be greatly missed in the home, in the school, and in the community. She always had a pleasant smile and word for every one. The funeral was held at the Sacred Heart church Tuesday forenoon, Rev. Father Hetherington officiating. Those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were: Mrs. M. Winterbotton, of Cedar Rapids; Messrs. Tim, Dan, and John Sullivan, of Dubuque; Miss Marie Sullivan of Fairfax, Iowa, and Michael Burns of Green Island, Iowa.
