Elkader Register, Thur., 17 Feb. 1921. Elkport Personals column.
Mr. August Benschnieder was born on Jan. 2, 1843, in Tribbenau, in Mecklenberg, Germany, and was the oldest son of Mr. Louis Benschneider and wife, Freiderika. In his infancy his parents brought him to Holy Baptism. When three years old his mother died and he came to America with his father, step-mother and a sister, he lived at home until his 21st year when he was united in Holy matrimony with Augusta Caroline Suckow and began farming and soon gained the necessary experience to make a success of farming, living on his farm for 17 years, when he sold the same and moved to Littleport. In the year 1916 he retired from active farm life and lived with his daughter, Mrs. Louis Andres of Littleport, in the same year his wife died.
From the happy union there were born eleven children, three of which died in infancy as well as a daughter in riper years. Deceased was never seriously ill in his life, his last illness being of a short duration, lasting but one day, death being caused by a stroke of paralysis. He reached the age of 78 years and one month. Those who mourned at his grave were: Mrs. Fred Krieg, Messrs. Louis, Henry, August and Chas. Benschneider, Mrs. J. Thein and Mrs. L. Andres and 13 grandchildren. Rev. P. Stolz was the officiating clergyman and interment was at the Ruegnitz cemetery.
(Note: The surname Benschnieder/Benschneider was spelled both ways in the article.)
