St. Olaf: Mrs. Harry Barnum was born July 24, 1871, in Boardman township. She was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keziah Stone. Her maiden name was Miss Leona Stone. May 30, 1888, she was united in marriage to Harry Barnum. To this union two sons were born, Verdine and Ralph. Mrs. Barnum's health has been failing this fall, and about a month ago she was taken to the Finley hospital at Dubuque, where an operation was performed and the best medical care given, but she suddenly passed away Wednesday evening, November 20th.
Mrs. Barnum has for a long time been a telephone operator for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. and the farmers' lines, and has performed her duties very faithfully. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband and two sons, Verdine, a teacher at Pomeroy, and Ralph at home, and a host of friends who will miss her as a neighbor and true friend.
Funeral services were held at the chapel Saturday at 2 p.m. and were attended by a large crowd. Rev. S. J. Strandjord officiated.
She was laid to rest in the Farmersburg cemetery. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. The pallbearers were Wm. Busch, Fred Orvis, K. K. Stearns, Wm. Fuhrman, Wm. Carney, and H. W. Wilke.
The out of town friends who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Ben Miller of Oak Park, Ill.; Mrs. Wm. Briggs of Dubuque; Ralph Bachtell of Postville; Mr. and Mrs. Mirth Miles, Mrs. Floris Nading, Mrs. Carl Schmidt, all of Littleport; and Earl Dehaven and Vern Bachtell, both of McGregor.
