Clayton County Register, Thur., 17 Oct. 1935.
Guttenberg: Benjamin J. Lake, prominent business man of Guttenberg, died suddenly of a heart attack at his barber shop on Front Street on Wednesday afternoon of last week at about 4:00, at the age of 66 years, 8 months and 9 days. His sudden death not only came as a shock to his family, but to the entire community, as he was a man who was held in high regard by all who knew him. He had not been in the best of health of late, but was up and about until death called him.
Mr. Lake was born at Guttenberg, Iowa, on January 30, 1869, where he received his education and grew to manhood. When a young man he served an apprenticeship in learning the barber trade, which occupation he followed to the time of his death, having operated a barber shop here for over 40 years. With the exception of a few years, when he worked at his trade at Elkader, and at St. Louis, Mo., Mr. Lake spent his entire life in Guttenberg. He was married at Guttenberg to Miss Helena Tieke.
His death is mourned by his widow; three sons, A. J. Lake, of Guttenberg, Edward Lake of Chicago, and Dr. Anthony Lake of Portland, Ore.; three daughters, Mrs. J. T. Kuempel of Guttenberg, Mrs. Chas. Tillia of Ottumwa, and Miss Helen Lake of Guttenberg; two brothers, Henry Lake of Luxemburg and O. H. Lake of Guttenberg; one sister, Mrs. Lena Holtfoerster, of St. Louis, Mo., and 11 grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Father J. A. Dupont at St. Mary's Catholic church in Guttenberg Saturday morning, with burial in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
