Funeral services for Peter M. Schmitt were held at 8 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic church. The Rev. J. A. Dupont officiated.
Mr. Schmitt died Thursday in the home of his niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Weber, where he had lived most of the past 16 years. He had been ill about three weeks. Mr. Schmitt was 77 years old at his death.
Mr. Schmitt was born July 16, 1858, the son of Paul and Elizabeth Schmitt, on a farm near Holy Cross, and he lived there most of his life. He was a contractor and carpenter by trade. He left the farm to live with the Webers upon the death of his brother 16 years ago. He never married.
Mr. Schmitt was buried in the cemetery at Holy Cross. The Rev. Bomholt of Holy Cross officiated at the grave.
Pallbearers were James Foxen, Antony Konzen, Frank Schmitt, Nick Lucas, Henry Diesburg and Steve Schroeder, all of Holy Cross.
Mr. and Mrs. Weber are the only relatives in this vicinity who live to mourn him, but they are joined by a host of Mr. Schmitt's friends.

Guttenberg: P. M. Schmitt, long-time resident of Guttenberg, passed away at the home of his niece, Mrs. Nic Weber, here last Thursday morning at 5:00 o'clock at the age of 77 years and 29 days, following an illness of long duration.
Mr. Schmitt was born at Holy Cross, Dubuque county, Iowa, on July 16, 1858, the last survivor of the three Schmitt brothers, pioneer residents of Dubuque county. When a young man he served an apprenticeship in learning the carpenter's trade, which occupation he followed for many years. For a number of years he was successfully engaged in the contracting business and 16 years ago he came to Guttenberg to make his home with his niece, Mrs. Nic Weber, and husband.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J. A. Dupont at St. Mary's Catholic church here on Saturday morning with interment in the cemetery at Holy Cross.
