The death of Mrs. Emma Mitchell occurred Sunday evening at the home of her son, Ray, near Arlington. The remains were brought here Tuesday afternoon and funeral services occurred at the M.E. church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. James P. Gable. The pall bearers were: G. W. Barr, Lee King, E. H. Sargent, John Tinker, Geo. Kramer and R. C. Norris. Interment was made in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
Mrs. Mitchell, nee Emma Elizabeth, daughter of George and Lucy Speed was born February 16, 1859, at New Wine, Dubuque County, Iowa. In 1864 she moved with her parents to Clayton county, settling near Strawberry Point. She was united in marriage to David Mitchell Dec. 31, 1879. To this union four children were born, two sons and two daughters, all residing near Arlington.
For twenty-one years, Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell lived on a farm about six miles northwest of Strawberry Point. In 1908 they moved to town. Mr. Mitchell passed away April 11, 1911.
Mrs. Mitchell and her youngest daughter lived in the home in Strawberry Point until September, 1934, when they went to reside in the home of her son, Ray, near Arlington. She was a member of the local Methodist church, the Industrial club and the Royal Neighbors.
Surviving are her four children: Ray Mitchell, Mrs. Richard (Bessie) Nus, Don Mitchell and Leta Mitchell, all living near Arlington; seven grandchildren; two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. M. C. Guinn of Brainard, Minn., Mrs. Jennie Blake of Oelwein, W. A. Speed of Bloomington, Ind., and George Speed of Volga.
