Clayton County Register, Thur., 1 Aug. 1935.
Harris McCann, 47, Dubuque unemployed sheet metal worker, was believed to have been killed by a Chicago Great Western freight train near Graf sometime Sunday morning.
McCann was believed by officials to have been "rolled" by a freight train while attempting to bum a free ride. His body was found lying beside the tracks a mile west of Graf shortly before 8:30 o'clock Sunday morning.
McCann, according to an examination, suffered numerous broken bones. Both legs and arms were broken while his skull was also fractured. The wheels of the train did not pass over his body, leading railroad and county officials to believe that McCann was attempting to hop a freight when he was "rolled" or sideswiped by the train.
Mr. McCann was born at Volga City, Ia. He was formerly a sheet metal worker but had not been employed lately.
Besides his widow, he is survived by five daughters: Mrs. William Fransen, Anna, Harriet, Hazel and Rita; three sons, Hale, Robert and John, all of Dubuque; his mother, Mrs. George McCann, of Volga City; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Schadle of Chicago, Mrs. Walter Royce of Wadena, Ia., and Mrs. Walter Earnest of Arlington, Ia.; one brother, Hadwin McCann, of Chicago Heights, Ill.; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Irene, preceded him in death five weeks ago.
