Gazette, The (Cedar Rapids-Iowa City, IA) - Tuesday, August 30, 2005
Burnell "Bummy" Dunn, 84, of Strawberry Point, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, his loving wife at his side and a smile across his face. His fondness for his wife, 11 children, 28 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren kept him young at heart. His broad smile and stories entertained those around him. Today, he's shooting a game of pool with his son Tom while listening to the Cubs.
Burnell was born Sept. 8, 1920, the third child of Jeremiah "Ralph" and Edna Mae ( Miles) Dunn. He lived, was educated, and worked in Strawberry Point until his health forced him into retirement.
He married his high school sweetheart, Rosemary Burke, on Aug. 26, 1941. Together, Burnell and Rosemary raised their children and helped to raise their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Their home was full of love and joy and each new birth was a cause for celebration.
Burnell is survived by his wife; his children, Jerry (Shiela) of Cedar Rapids, Rose Ann Siegele of Kasson, Minn., Robert of Freeport, Ill., Gregory of Iowa City, Mary (Larry) Kreinbrink of Mount Vernon, Marcelene (Dick) Keppler of Strawberry Point, Lynette (Merlin) of Strawberry Point, Kevin (John Hoops) of Eugene, Ore., Felicia (Al) Vaske of Dundee, Steve (Kenny Miller) of Phoenix; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Burnell was preceded in death by his son, Tom; his parents; brother; sister; one grandson, Gregory Goedke; one nephew, Leroy Dunn; and one son-in-law, Jim Siegele.
He will be remembered as the baseball pitcher who hauled eggs for Goodrich and milk for Sunlight Dairy, managed the liquor store, finished the Register's Sunday crossword puzzle, and wheeled about town in his wheelchair.
Now that smile is lifting the spirits of other souls.
Visitation will be held at the Roberson Funeral Home in Strawberry Point today, Aug. 30, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at St Mary's in Strawberry Point on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 10:30 a.m., preceded by visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Strawberry Point Cemetery.
