Clayton County Register, Thur., 2 May 1935.
Carl John Straus passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. Henrietta Sauerbry, in Guttenberg, on Friday at 12:00 noon, at the age of 18 years, 11 months and 6 days, following a several months' illness. Deceased was born at Larned, Kan., on May 20, 1916. In 1917 he came to Guttenberg with his mother, to make his home here, where the remainder of his ambitious life was spent. He was a graduate of the Guttenberg high school, being a member of the class of 1934. While in high school he was a very enthusiastic and active member of the baseball and basketball teams and all other school activities. He was a young man of a pleasing personality, held in high regard by all in this community. During his illness he was a patient sufferer and had hopes for recovery until the Angel of Death called him to the Great Beyond. All that loving hands could do and medical knowledge could suggest was done for him to save his life, but all to no avail. His untimely death is deeply mourned by his mother, Mrs. Marie Straus, of Volga township; five sisters, Mrs. Walter Adamy, of Alameda, Calif., Mrs. Henrietta Sauerbry of Guttenberg, Mrs. Hannah Reimer of Volga township, Mrs. Minnie Funk of Colesburg, and Mrs. Delbert Schroeder of Jefferson township; one brother, William Straus of Garber, and many other relatives and friends, by whom he will be sadly missed. His father preceded him in death a number of years ago.
The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. W. J. F. Adix at St. John's American Lutheran church in Guttenberg, on Sunday afternoon, with interment in the cemetery at National. The funeral was largely attended.
