Clayton County Register, Thur., 25 Apr. 1935.

Guttenberg: Alexander MacDonald, Guttenberg's oldest, highly regarded resident, passed away at his home in Guttenberg on Sunday evening at 9:00 o'clock, at the age of 94 years, three months and 17 days, the cause of his death being mostly due to the infirmities of old age. Mr. MacDonald was born at Gretna Green, Dumfrieshire, Scotland, on January 4, 1841, where he received his education. In 1859 he came to America with his parents settling in Volga township, Clayton county, Iowa. He was married at Dubuque to Miss Jane Patrick, who preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 1910. After their marriage the couple settled on a farm in Volga township, where they resided until the year 1908, when they came to Guttenberg to make their home, where the deceased spent the remainder of his ambitious life. Since the death of his wife, his sister, Mrs. Mary Patrick, who is now 85 years old, kept house for him here, from whom he always received the tenderest of care. Mr. MacDonald was one of a pleasing personality, a man who stood for justice and righteousness at all times, which won him many friends during life, and by whom his memories will be forever cherished. In politics he was a staunch Republican. To do acts of kindness for his loved ones was his greatest pleasure in life at all times. He was a lover of true nature, making and planting beautiful flower gardens and building bird houses about his home every spring.

Mr. MacDonald was also a musician, playing the violin, and one of his greatest pleasures in his home was to play the beautiful melodies of his home-land, Scotland. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Patrick, of Guttenberg, and numerous other relatives and friends, who will all sadly miss this good and Christian man. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. D. D. Welch, of Dubuque, at the MacDonald home in Guttenberg on Wednesday afternoon, with interment in Mt. Harmony cemetery near Elkport. The funeral was largely attended.

(Note: A picture of Mr. MacDonald with his violin accompanied this article, but did not reproduce well enough to present here.)
