Thursday, 22 November 1906, Elkader Register, Guttenberg, p7, c5, From the Press:
Mrs. Elizabeth Handke, whose death occurred Thursday, Nov. 8, at her home three miles south of Guttenberg, was born in Germany March 27, 1852, and with her relatives came to this county in 1860, when a child of eight years. Deceased was twice married, her first husband’s name being Gruener, and to them were born three children, namely: Othmer and John Gruener, residents of Rutland, S. D., and Mrs. Melvina Timm, of Berlin, N. D. Her second marriage occurred in Grant county, Wis., to Oswald Handke and to this union eight children were born, seven of whom are living. They are Mrs. Otto Essman, who resides in this township north of town, and Oswald, Alvin, Bertha, Harry, Edgard and Waldemar Handke at home. Surviving her besides the children are three brothers, viz: Mike Seippel, of Julien, Dubuque county; Philip, of Cassville, Wis., and another brother residing in Germany. Although being a constant sufferer, she did not complain, but bore all with great fortitude. In the passing away of this estimable lady death has removed a kind and loving neighbor and one whom will be sorely missed in the community in which she resided. The funeral was held Sunday, Nov. 11, with services at St. John’s Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. J. Janzig. Interment was made in the city cemetery.
