Clayton County Register, Thur., 28 Mar. 1935. Guttenberg column.
Edward Christian Ennen, pioneer resident of Guttenberg, died suddenly of heart trouble at his home in Guttenberg early Friday morning, at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 14 days. The lifeless body was found in bed by his wife Friday morning. His death came as a shock to all in this community. He was held in high regard by all who knew him, and he will be sadly missed by all.
Mr. Ennen was born in Germany on April 8, 1855, where he received his education. When a young man he came to America, settling in Wisconsin for a time, then coming to Guttenberg, where the remainder of his ambitious life was spent. Fifty-two years ago he was married at Guttenberg to Miss Elizabeth Dochnahl. For many years he was engaged in business here. He was at one time a member of the local board of education and town council and was at all times greatly interested in the progress of Guttenberg. For many years he was the local representative and correspondent of the "Nord Iowa Herold," German newspaper published and edited by Charles Reinecke, formerly at Elkader. He was employed for a number of years at local button factories.
He is survived by his widow; one son, Oswald, of South Dakota; three daughters, Mrs. Grover Koehn of German Valley, Ill., Mrs. Reinhold Pottratz of Ward, S.D., and Mrs. Harvey C. Meyer of Greene, Iowa; nine grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Seven children have preceded him in death.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. C. A. Jacobi at the Ennen home here Sunday afternoon, with burial in the city cemetery. The funeral was largely attended.
