Austia Patterson Shumaker died at her home in Bellvue, Ohio, March 2, at the age of 80 years. She was born in Wagner township, Clayton county, Iowa, February 3, 1855, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Patterson. She taught school for a number of years, at one time in the Elgin schools. She was a faithful member of the United Brethren church and spent ten years of her life in China as a missionary. At the end of the first five years she returned to the United States to visit her parents and returned again to China. It was there that she met and married Dr. Henry Shumaker, M.D., who was also a missionary. As Austia Patterson she was widely known as a lecturer and minister.
Surviving are her husband, Dr. Shumaker, who is a practicing physician, two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Wonser, of Tama, Iowa, and Mrs. Rose Connor, of Platte, S.Dak. She was a sister of the late Mrs. Ann Cooley.
Burial was in the family lot in Bucyrus, Ohio, on March 5th. Hers was a long life of joyous service.
