Clayton County Register, Thur., 7 Mar. 1935.
Julius Schmidt died at his country home in Read township on Sunday evening, February 17, at 6:30 o'clock, at the age of seventy-two years, seven months, and nine days.
Mr. Schmidt was born near Garnavillo, Iowa, on July 8, 1862, the son of Carl and Maria Schmidt. At an early age he was baptized a Christian, and at a later time renewed his baptismal covenant in the vows of confirmation which were given by the late Rev. F. W. Seifert in the Zion's Evangelical Lutheran church at Clayton Center, of which church he has continued to be an active member.
On March 27, 1885, he was united in marriage with Emma Lembke. To them were born one daughter, Mrs. Albert Engelhardt, who lives on a farm near Monona, and one son, Arthur, who resides on the farm adjoining the one of his deceased father.
Besides the widow and the two children, he leaves to mourn his passing, one brother, William Schmidt, of Elkader, five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
Mr. Schmidt devoted his entire adult life to farming, living one year in Farmersburg township and spending the rest of his life, forty-eight years, at his late home in Read township. Mr. Schmidt's life was truly of a pastoral nature. He enjoyed his home and busied himself with the duties on his small farm. Visiting with his friends and his children and their families gave him the great joy of his life which lies in strong family associations. To those in his intimate family circle and the friends in the rural community in which he lived, his memory will be a lasting and precious one.
