McGregor, Sept. 13 – Miss Virginia Smith, one of the most beautiful and beloved young ladies of the village of National, in Clayton County, committed suicide last Sunday, by taking poison. Miss Smith was the daughter of Barton Smith, son of (illegible), the family being very respectable, and one of the oldest in the county.
The cause that led to the (illegible) terrible death was as follow: About a year ago, Squire Hudson, a young man, and longtime resident of National, (illegible) keeping company with Miss Smith. The young man (illegible) and a person well fitted to be in the company of ladies; so the parents of the girl allowed the attachment to strengthened. It developed now under the promise of marriage, the poor girl was persuaded to indulge in improper actions with Hudson. A week ago last Sunday, when Hudson returned from his (illegible), the girl informed him she was about to give birth to a child, and he was the father of it; and also that he must marry her at once. This Hudson at first (illegible). The girl then went before Notary Republic Slaughter and swore the child was Hudson’s. The two were married on the Monday following.
On the Friday following goaded by (illegible) and remorse, the poor unfortunate drank poison and ended her troubles in suicides grave. She was only eighteen years old at the time of her death and un-(illegible) crime became known she was reported by all as one of the purest and (illegible) promising young ladies in the town. A terrible blight upon her parents’ (illegible), and sympathy of the entire community is extended to them in this (illegible) terrible affliction.
