Sophie Maria Becker, born May 21st, 1855 in Warlof, Mecklenberg Schwerin, came to Guttenberg, Iowa in the year 1873; in 1887 to Grand Meadow township; in 1895 to Wagner township; 1909 to Postville. Here she lived with her mother up to the year 1916. From then until May of this year she kept house for herself. At this time she was found she was in need of special care, and therefore transferred to the County Home in Clayton Center. Here she fell sick, not to recover, and passed away Sept. 4th about 11:30 p.m.
From her 8th to the 16th year she was in the school for the deaf and dumb in Ludwigs Lust, where she learned, not only to read and write and other useful things, but also the truths pertaining to salvation. As she had been baptized when an infant, so she was received into communicant membership of the Lutheran church, after she had been instructed in the chief doctrines of Christian faith and life. So long as her mother lived she was a regular communicant, and read books and papers in German.
We hope that the God of Grace found entrance into her heart to give her saving faith, and that she now is where all ears hear, and all tongues confessing say, He hath don all things well; He maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
She reached an age of 72 years and a little more than 3 months. Mourners are: Her only brother, H. Becker, Monona, Iowa; Mrs. Maria Bueckmann-Becker; Laura Becker Knuth; Amanda Becker Knuth; Fred Becker; Mrs. Doering Knuth.
Her body is laid to rest beside her parents in Wagner township about seven miles south from Luana. Funeral services were held in St. Paul's Lutheran church in Monona, Iowa, Sept. 6th. - Monona Leader
