Harry Barnum, aged 84 years and four months, died at his home in St. Olaf early in the morning of December 6. At his bedside when the end came were his two sons, Ralph and Verdine.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 8, at the St. Olaf chapel, with the Rev. S. J. Strandjord officiating. Interment was in Farmersburg cemetery. Pallbearers were: Vernett Embretson, Floyd Orvis, Donald Houg, Harvey Busch, Orvin Embretson, and Alvin Larson.
Harry Barnum was born on a farm west of Elkader on Aug. 6, 1865. In 1888 he was married to Leona Stone at Prairie du Chien, Wis. They lived on a farm southeast of St. Olaf for a number of years and then moved to St. Olaf, where they operated the hotel. Later he went into the building moving business and cement work. He also ran a livery and dray line.
His wife preceded him in death in 1935. He remained active and worked part time until the last couple years when failing health kept him at home. He had been under the doctor's care for the last three weeks.
He is survived by two sons, Ralph, with whom he made his home, and Verdine of Kalona, Iowa, and two grandchildren, Sandra and Dean Barnum.
