Otto Hanson was born the son of Hans R. Hanson and Clara Johnson Hanson on Oct. 6, 1890, at Towner, N. Dak. At an early age he moved with the family to Clayton county where the family home was established on a farm in Marion township and he resided on this farm for the remainder of his life.

He received his early education in the rural schools and also attended Upper Iowa university at Fayette and Lenox college at Hopkinton. He was confirmed at the Marion Lutheran church by the Rev. N. Arveson and remained a member of this church until death.

Mr. Hanson served his country in World War I and was a charter member of the American Legion Post No. 388 of St. Olaf.

On October 12, 1918, he was united in marriage to Nellie Anderson. Four children were born to this union, two daughters and two sons.

He died at the Postville hospital Thursday morning, Dec. 8, 1949, at the age of 59 years, 2 months and 2 days. Although his health had been failing for the past several years, he was active until the last few days, when death came rather suddenly.

Survivors are his wife, Nellie; his children, Howard of Farmersburg, Mrs. Arlene Heck of St. Louis, Mo., Otto Jr. and Ida Mae at home; one sister, Mrs. Carl Johansen of Elkader; three brothers, Robert of Elkader, Ford and Charles of California; two grandchildren, Judy and Betty Jane Hanson; also several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister, Ida Marie.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home to the Marion Lutheran church at 2:30 with the Rev. S. J. Strandjord officiating. Burial was in the Marion cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Marvin Staake, Alven Jensen, Henry Vellersven, Kenneth Anderson, Will Bergan and Theodore Wold.
