Elkader Register, Thur., 13 Nov. 1924. Strawberry Point column.
Word came from Oelwein Saturday announcing the death of William M. Steele, which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ed Horsefield, in that city. Owing to the illness of both Mr. and Mrs. Steele they went a week ago to the home of their daughter, where she could care for them better. Mr. Steele's health had been failing him for some time. Friend's knew he was bad but his death came as a shock to them. William Steele was born in 1858 in Yankee Settlement, now Edgewood. He was married to Miss Cora Scofield. One daughter, Norma, now Mrs. Ed Horsefield, blessed this union. Mr. Steele was ever ready to help those in trouble. He was a good husband and father and will be greatly missed by all who knew him as a neighbor and friend. His sister, Mrs. Carrie Austin, passed away Feb. 22, 1884, and his father, G. N. Steele, June 4, 1912. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, daughter Mrs. Norma Horsefield of Oelwein, and his aged mother Mrs. Frances Steele, besides other relatives and friends. Short services were held Sunday at the Horsefield home in Oelwein, after which the remains were brought here and services were conducted in the Congregation church, Rev. W. W. Maxwell officiating. Interment took place in the local cemetery. A good man has been taken from us.
