Elkader Register, Thur., 16 Oct. 1924.

John M. Carpenter was born in Lycoming Co., Pa., Feb. 23, 1850, and died at Finley Hospital, Dubuque, Ia., Oct. 6, 1924, having attained the age of 74 years, 7 months and 13 days. On the thirteenth day of April, 1875, he was united in marriage to Olive E. Whipple of Cox Creek township, and for nearly half a century they traveled life's pathway together. Theirs was a most happy union and to them were born six children: Mrs. Daisy Fa_mer (looks like Farmer) of Mederville, Iowa; Lily, who passed away at the age of fifteen in 1894; Mrs. Sadie Luense of Marion, Iowa; Alva L. of Aurora, Iowa; John Delbert and Mrs. Laura Henry of Strawberry Point. He is the second child of Jackson and Mary Carpenter and came to Clayton Co., Iowa, with his parents in 1854, the remaining seventy years of his life having been spent in this immediate vicinity. He was an industrious and hard working man and had been in unusually good health for a man of his age until a week before his death when an affliction suddenly developed which necessitated an operation on Sept. 29, and another on the following Friday. For a time he seemed to rally then gradually grew weaker till the end came Monday at 1:30 a.m. when his soul left the body and passed on to his Maker. All that loving hands and medical science could do were ministered unto him but God had called and he answered to His summons. It can be truly said of him "He was a good man" practicing righteousness and honesty in all his dealings and loving his neighbors as himself. He watched and aided with great interest the development of this country from the oxen and covered wagon to the automobile and air ship of the present day. At a young age he assisted his mother in assuming the responsibility of the family and farm while his father and older brother served our country in the war of 1861 and 65. For the past 18 years he has resided on a little farm near Strawberry Point where he has many friends who will miss him and cherish his memory in the years to come.

He is survived by his faithful wife, two sons, three daughters, twenty-three grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. And by two brothers, Alex of Strawberry Point and James of Cogswell, N.D. Two sisters, Mrs. V. Marshall of Corona, Cali., and Mrs. John Alderson of Osborne, Iowa.

The funeral was held from the family residence Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Maxwell of the Congregational Church officiating, assisted by Mr. True of Edgewood, a lifetime friend of the deceased. A large concourse of friends accompanied the remains to their final resting place in the beautiful cemetery at Strawberry Point.
