Elkader Register, Thur., 7 Aug. 1924.
Fred W. Libby, for forty-three years in the employ of the C.M. & St. P. railway and one of its most popular passenger conductors, died at his home in Dubuque Sunday morning at 5 o'clock after a brief illness.
He was born August 22, 1860, at Elkader, and entered the employ of the company on attaining his majority and was rapidly promoted. For many years he had been a passenger conductor on trains running between Dubuque and Chicago, Dubuque and LaCrosse and on the Turkey River and Preston branches. He spent most of the years of his manhood as a resident of Dubuque, though at times his position made it necessary for him to make his home in Chicago, LaCrosse, West Union and Preston, Minnesota. Few men had a wider acquaintance and was admired by all who knew him.
In 1887 Mr. Libby was married to Lillian, only daughter of the late Edwin C. Smedlye and Mrs. Lydia Smedley, who, with a daughter, Mrs. Grace Doodeward of Chicago and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Goodwin and Mrs. H. W. White both of Volga City, Iowa, survive him.- Volga City News.
(Note: Both spellings, Smedlye/Smedley, were used in the article.)
